When lasers came on the scene, they revolutionized dentistry. Precise, minimally invasive treatments that were once unimaginable became possible. From soft tissue procedures to oral surgery, lasers have become indispensable tools that allow us to provide more comfortable, effective care with faster healing and far greater comfort.
They also offer some new options for treating TMJ disorders and face pain.
The complex nature of TMJ disorders (TMD) – involving muscles, joints, ligaments, and nerves – means that effective treatment can sometimes be elusive. Treatment usually requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both symptoms and their causes. While bite guards and medications can bring some relief, many patients continue to experience chronic pain and limited jaw function.
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as cold laser therapy or photobiomodulation, provides another treatment option. Unlike surgical lasers that cut tissue, low-level lasers use specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular healing processes. When used to treat TMD, photobiomodulation offers some stellar benefits:
- Pain reduction. The laser light stimulates the release of endorphins – the body’s natural painkillers – while also reducing inflammation. Many patients experience significant pain relief both during and immediately after treatment.
- Improved healing. LLLT increases cellular metabolism and ATP production. This can help repair damaged tissues in the TMJ complex and surrounding muscles.
- Enhanced blood flow. LLLT improves microcirculation in the treated areas, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to healing tissues while helping clear out metabolic waste.
Muscle relaxation. Laser treatment can help reduce muscle tension and spasms often associated with TMD symptoms.
Science supports this approach. Last month brought us a new systematic review of 44 randomized clinical trials – the gold standard of medical research – involving 1816 patients. Its authors confirmed that LLLT significantly reduces pain intensity and improves function of the lower jaw. Outcomes of the therapy were found to be
superior…compared to conventional treatments like occlusal splints, NSAIDs, and TENS therapy, particularly for myogenic TMD [jaw pain and stiffness caused by tight, overworked, or inflamed muscles].
It was also found to be incredibly safe, with no serious adverse events reported.
Just recently, we brought a new state-of-the-art laser into our office so we can provide this kind of therapy to our own patients: the THOR laser system.
Used at Harvard Medical School and top clinics around the country, THOR isn’t just another laser. It’s precisely engineered to deliver optimal wavelengths and power densities for maximum healing. Every aspect of the system is based on extensive research on photobiomodulation and its therapeutic potential. This means more predictable, effective treatments for patients like you.
During treatment, you’ll simply relax while the laser is applied to specific points around your jaw, temples, and neck area. Most patients find the experience soothing. Often, they describe a gentle warming sensation – or no sensation at all.
Treatment sessions typically last from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your specific condition and treatment protocol. There’s no need for anesthetics or incisions or downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately after your session.
Many patients notice improvement after just one to three sessions, although the full benefits typically develop over the course of several treatments. Each session builds upon the previous. The effect is cumulative.
While our main use of THOR is for treating TMDs, the laser is also effective for other types of face pain, including trigeminal neuralgia, tension headaches and migraines, muscle tension, post-op healing, and chronic facial pain. This versatility makes the THOR laser ideal for addressing the complex, interconnected nature of facial pain and TMD symptoms.
We think it’s a perfect addition to our clinic – one more tool that is sure to find a place in many patients’ treatment plans, 100% customized to their needs, 100% focused on helping them achieve both optimal oral health and overall well-being.
