Sleep Disorders Disrupt Deep Sleep in Millions of Americans

Sleep apnea is a chronic health issue that affects an estimated 18-20 million Americans. It affects both men and women, but most often afflicts those who are middle-aged and overweight.

For many, this sleep disorder can go undiagnosed for years until it eventually starts contributing to other health problems, such as hypertension, depression, high blood pressure, fatigue, and increased risk of stroke/heart attack.

There are two types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea.

Central sleep apnea occurs when a person’s brain fails to properly signal their muscles that control breathing, so their breathing stops and starts repeatedly during sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea. It often develops because one’s tongue or the soft tissue in the back of their throat tends to relax during sleep, which can restrict the airway to the lungs. As the airway becomes partially or fully blocked, breathing stops briefly until the person wakes up and makes adjustments to resume breathing. These repeated awakenings disrupt the normal sleep cycle, but are often not recalled the next day. As a result, the person wakes up not knowing why they feel so tired, and continue to feel fatigued and sleepy throughout the day.

Sleep Apnea Drowsiness Can Be Dangerous and Deadly

Daytime fatigue, lack of energy, and inability to focus at work are key indicators of a sleep disorder. Struggling to stay awake during the day can have serious consequences when operating machinery or working long shifts. The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration estimates driving while drowsy causes 100,000 reported car accidents annually. Not all these accidents can be attributed to sleep apnea, but sleep disorders are widely recognized as major contributors.

Snoring Is a Common Sign of Sleep Apnea

Snoring is a major sleep apnea symptom caused by having to breathe harder to get air. While not everyone who snores develops sleep apnea, the vast majority of patients who have obstructive sleep apnea, do snore.
