Common Symptoms of a TMJ Disorder

The most common symptoms of TMJ disorder, or TMD, are:
  • Pain in the jaw, neck, and face
  • Tenderness around the eye or temples
  • Muscle spasms in the face and jaw
  • A jaw that clicks or pops when opened or when chewing
  • Locking jaw
  • Jaw discomfort or aching
  • Tightness or stiffness in the jaw muscles
  • Pain or ringing in the ears
  • Decrease in motion (e.g. limited opening of the mouth)
  • Facial swelling
  • Inflamed jaw muscles
  • Pain with chewing
  • A misaligned bite
  • Sudden shift in bite
  • Deviation of the jaw to one side when opening
  • Teeth not fitting together properly
  • Sinus pressure
  • Recurring headaches
  • Worn down teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Stiff neck
Those afflicted by TMJ problems or TMD are all too familiar with one or more of these painful symptoms. And, if not treated, the pain can become chronic and further aggravate the jaw structure. In some patients, the pain can develop into a debilitating quality of life issue that restricts normal activities.

To seek a solution, a patient may visit multiple doctors in an attempt to find relief. Because the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is so complex, it can be extremely difficult to accurately diagnose TMD and even harder to treat it correctly. TMD’s symptoms can be confused with other health issues and may not be immediately identified. As a result, some patients receive a treatment that only temporarily alleviates their symptoms.
