Symptoms of sleep apnea vary from person to person, but there are several consistent signs that may point to sleep apnea. Common sleep apnea symptoms include:
Morning headaches
Waking up tired, irritable, or depressed
Waking up with a sore throat or dry mouth
Daytime fatigue or drowsiness
Insomnia
Snoring or being told you snore
Difficulty concentrating or focusing
Decreased sex drive
Drowsiness when driving or on public transportation
Weight gain
At the Laguna Hills Center for Sleep Apnea & CPAP Intolerance, we can help you determine if these symptoms are related to a sleep disorder.
One of the most common sleep disorders - only second to insomnia - is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which occurs when throat muscles relax or the tongue falls back to fully or partially block air from getting to your lungs. OSA is often responsible for causing someone to snore or gasp for air throughout the night. When a person struggles to breathe or stops breathing, the brain partially awakes so that the person can breathe harder or adjust to remove the blockage. A good, restorative night of sleep becomes impossible if that person is repeatedly awakening and falling back to sleep hundreds of times a night. In many cases, because the person never fully wakes up, he or she is usually not aware that this is happening, yet routinely feels exhausted each morning.
Obtain an Accurate Sleep Disorder Diagnosis
In most cases, an overnight sleep study, called a polysomnogram, is the most accurate way to diagnose sleep disorders. During a polysomnogram, small sensors are attached to your head and body to measure brain waves, heart rate, breathing patterns, eye and limb movements, and oxygen level in the blood. These measurements together with observations during your sleep will provide the basis for a diagnosis.

This is the best office I've ever been to. The home-like and warm atmosphere makes me feel very relaxed whenever I go there. The professional staff and Dr. Abdulla really changed my life by attending to my sleep apnea and dental needs. Dr. Abdulla made me a sleep apnea device which helped me sleep a lot better. Her gentle approach and knowledge in the field makes me feel very comfortable. It has been the best decision I've made.
